The state owned University of Liberia was established in
1862 as Liberia College and became a university in 1951. As the oldest degree-granting
institution in West Africa it has trained leaders of state, church, industry,
and commerce for Liberia and other African countries. During Africa's colonial
period, the university provided higher education for many Africans for whom such
education was unavailable in the colonies, and continued during postcolonial times.
Notable graduates include Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, and the current Vice
President of Liberia, Joseph Boakai. There are three campuses: this main original
one originally designed by architect J. Max Bond, the medical faculty campus downtown
and Fendall campus, about 14 miles northeast of Monrovia, which is currently under
renovation. Firestone Rubber company is coordinating with Indiana University in
the United States to rebuild the School of Law which is a major need in restoring
lasting peace; lawyers are being trained to fill faculty positions.
