"This sculpture was originally commissioned by the W.
R Tolbert administration for erection at Providence Island atop the concrete base
that can be seen as one crosses the Gabriel Johnson Tucker bridge on Johnson Street.
Tolbert didn't live to unveil the statue. After the 1980 coup, in an effort to
save it from being destroyed or stolen from the warehouse of the Ministry of Public
Works, it was agreed President Doe would unveil it during his 1986 inauguration
celebrations. It was erected on the grounds of the Centennial Pavilion under the
supervision of Wilbert A. J. Hoff, who then worked with the Ministry of Public
works.
