American School (Before and after pix) Founded in 1960, this school was and is considered the best primary and secondary institution in Monrovia. The school was formally called the American Cooperative School (ACS), until it closed in 1989 due the civil war. During the war it was looted and closed down. Due to the efforts of Mrs. Anita Booth and others, the school reopened in September 2007 and is now called the American International School of Monrovia (AISM). Its reopening was widely seen as a symbol of a new era of peace and prosperity in Liberia, and the ceremony was attended by the President and other diplomatic officials.
